Code of Ethics: List

Objectivity

Objectivity is an essential component of journalism. Journalists aim to help their audience make up their minds by giving them all the necessary information to do so. Our job as reporters is to state the facts without letting our personal biases bleed through.

Accuracy

Journalists get the opportunity to tell someone’s story. It is essential that we are telling that story accurately. While mistakes in other professions may not be as detrimental, mistakes in reporting can and will affect someone other than just yourself.

Truth

It is important to be truthful in both your intentions and in your reporting. Being truthful and honest can lead to a sense of security and comfort in the interviewing process. Having a reputation for being truthful makes journalists more trustworthy and credible, creating better connections and relationships.

Compassion

We as journalists will undoubtedly have to cover a touchy subject at some point or another in our careers. We will encounter situations where it is necessary to have compassion toward the people we talk to. While we are journalists, we are also people first. It is important that we are as kind and compassionate as possible to everyone that enters our life, no matter the situation.

Diversity

Diversity can look different depending on the circumstances. We cannot accurately tell a story without having multiple different voices represented. This comes into play specifically when writing about politics. It is crucial that we include as many sides to the story as possible.

Self awareness

Self-awareness is important to me in all aspects of my life. Being aware of your strengths and weaknesses will make you a better journalist and a better person. Your weaknesses will not define you but rather give you an opportunity to grow. Part of self-awareness is knowing when to ask for help.
